Of course letting her try different models is the pragmatic direction to take, but that defeats the symbolic gesture of the gift. I want to hand her something wrapped and sentimental (if a gun can serve that purpose). I've always been an over-protective father and its a joke between us.
She won't be hitting the range often. She's not the type, so I think making an educated guess choice is OK. She hasn't handled enough handguns to know what she likes or doesn't like. Just for an emergency and my piece of mind.

If she's not going to practice then get her a big nightstand and a sawed off.
Likelihood of her ever needing it are pretty slim but like I said, if she's in any kind of connected housing situation like an apartment it's really not a good idea to go firing off a handgun that you are not proficient with.
