I've come to the conclusion that 'rescues' are simply in the business of selling used pets.
My wife brought home this
ragdoll last week (I didn't even know there was such a thing). The 'back story' the rescue laid out suggested she would be friendly and work well in a multi-cat environment; in real life she's the biggest b!tch-cat I've ever seen. She goes so far as to run to the window and hiss and try to attach cats that she sees
outside. She refuses to eat anything other than sliced turkey lunchmeat, and it has to be hand-fed - she won't eat it out of the bowl.
