Maybe its the photo, but the car above doesn't appear to have the additional inner box section of an L88 hood shown in the photo below, (although aftermarket ones are available from tons of vendors).
The real factory L88 hood had a round gasket attached to the underside to mate with the outer ring of the housing for the much smaller air filter:
I would guess (and its just that, a guess) that if its stated as 435 HP on the console plaque then your friend's car could have been an L71. They had a legit, factory rating of 435 HP. The factory, in a bit of trickery for the Feds, rated the L88 at 430 HP, although they really were closer to 550-600. (Don't see Chevy trying that these days...
)
