What kind of style are you after? Overlay or recessed?

Typically use a hardwood for the face frames, glue and pocket screw construction. The pocket screw jigs cost are nominal. Work like a charm and fast.

Build the boxes and shelves from cabinet grade ply. I'll skip all the details for build but you might check out the numerous sites to guide you along. Skip the biscuits. Glue and screw / pocket.

Doors and drawer fronts vary greatly but for discussion of wanting stability under temperatures and humidity, go for the MDF. Machines clean but harder on the blades or router bits. Paint spray with a two part urethane. If you want a wood grain, stay with the MDF but add the laminate by iron heat or veneer. The veneer process will take quite a bit more of your time and added equipment (ie: vacuum bag, vac pump, glue-up, etc.). Then you have the paint or stain process. For another chapter..

Unlimited sources for shelf, drawere guides, hinges and type, etc. and will take lots of pre-planning for whatever you select.
