Looking at that picture, I build it out of Maple plywood and paint everything. It ain't gonna to twist on ya. Dado, rabbet with some screw are your friends. Fill the screw hold on the outside with bondo and spray paint away. personally I rabbet a center shelf somewhere to make sure its stable so it would warp. Plus, its acts as a stop where the top and bottom doors joint. Shop grade Maple, classic core paints best IMO beside MDF.
