A quick search for recent sales history of 83/84 GTIs has me shaking my head a bit with sales north of 15K. As previously stated, MKI Sciroccos that are not rusted to death, have dents, bad paint, interiors, etc, are rare as hen's teeth nowadays.
There obviously isn't as big of a following as 911s, but give me a 10K MKI Schitrocket any day over a 911 costing twice as much. Wasn't always the case, but the 911 fanboy scene exploded and many mere mortals like myself have a hard time justifying the money.
That said, the thing that got me into VWs initially was the "Poor Man's Porsche" concept, and it ended up sticking. When you look at the relative values of these cars, it is about time they are showing some serious upward trending.
