Thanks guys. I tried the 'in the car' route but to no avail. So, I just pulled the motor/trans out; made sure it was level and stable and very carefully pulled the transmission mount off and then I pulled the front off the transmission (with a tray underneath in case something fell out); nothing did (watch for the pin at the bottom and the washer); very gently drove out the seal and put the new one in; I will get a gasket today and put it all back in and not expect any leakage. By the way, if the seal has leaked for a while there can be fluid build-up in the tunnel, smelly and a pita to clean up.
