Sorry, I forgot about this thread until it was bumped. In '74 the 4spd was still standard in the US and optional for 5spd. Starting in '75 was when that changed.

What you are reading is accurate for the 915 gearbox. However, prior to that, all the 901 and 911 gearbox variants had 4th and 5th the same in all the standard gearboxes. It was "X" on SWB cars, "Z" for '69 (actually from Nov '68 production on, some early '69 MY cars actually got an aluminum 901 gearbox), and then '70-71 got a "ZA" top gear.

Here's a thread with scans of the factory spec books for your reference, including type numbers, serial numbers, and the special ratio gearboxes.
