Lots of talk in the inner circles about RL Burnside's style back when I played acoustic (not good enough to make $$$, however - only self-entertainment).
As I recall, it was talk about his way of "slapping" - in his upstroke as well as down stroke.
I believe he's using "open G tuning" (Spanish tuning) in this video.

Note: I modeled my finger-pickin' style after buying a Mississippi John Hurt album 100 years ago.
Then I understood and began to flirt with John Fahey's style - also Leo Kottke.
I said "flirt" ...only got close.
