The higher the nav screen is, the quicker the driver can change his or her view from the screen to the windshield. So putting the screen up higher makes sense from a safety perspective.
But I agree - even with your cars (I work for MBUSA), the nav screens look dis-integrated from the dash - almost looks like it was put there as an afterthought. The screens in the MB cars are no longer touch screen since it is difficult to reach from a properly seated position - so the controls are integrated into the console area.
