Likely it's a MoCA (media over coax) device you are talking about.
Pretty much only two players in the MoCA space, Actiontec (used by Verizon FIOS) and Motorola (Used by everyone else and FIOS in the past)
Netgear have a coax to ethernet adaptor but it's a) pricey and b) i don't know if it provides the authentication ability that COX will require.
Your best bet is get a new unit from your provider, set it up as a WAN access point and hang a quality 3rd party router like an ASUS off it to handle DHCP and WIFI access.
