Follow-up to this...
I used Car-part.com to source a used transmission. Found one for <$600 with ~25k miles in Tucson. The shop waived the core because I drove down from Mesa.
Did the swap in a friends man-cave with a lift and lots of air tools.
Down side?...we had football on and a beer fridge taunting us. Removal and reinstall prep was day 1. Day 2 we got it all back together. Daughter is happy with the results and the car drives great.
