in the bay area you don't need oil as thin as 10-30 or 0w40 since it doesn't get that cold.
20w50 covers all the temperature ranges you will see and adds some extra thickness at cold/hot temps.
your oil fill should be in the middle of the dipstick area, there should be at least an inch of oil on the end of the stick. low oil level can make a noticeable difference in running pressure.
