Diamonds are more about a statement of value for the person you're buying it for. That being said some Women won't have you buy them a diamond for principle reasons but not many have those principles so strong they won't let you buy them a big expensive rock. And some just don't have the means to buy one big enough for the love they may have for the other but there is always a promise of a bigger one when they can.
Is it a brilliant marketing scheme? It works. Did it target Women? They seem to like them.
