They really aren't all that rare. Carbon is an immensely abundant element that when combined with heat and pressure is formed into a diamond. Under even just slightly less than ideal conditions and you would be looking at pencil graphite.
Regardless, they are still special. I am off the notion that the stone picks you. There are just so many different variables when picking a stone and thats even if you are just shopping for a diamond. The spectrum of minerals that are gem quality is staggering! Go with the one that you like. Sure, the diamond will most likely cost you more $ per carat... But so be it. Life is too short to worry that much.
PS. Check out Kunzite and Alexandrite. Both beautiful, relatively uncommon gem stones.
