The RSs are among the most thoroughly documented cars on the market. Easy to see original color and equipment; easy to see proper engine number.
There are probably over a dozen cars with duplicate VINs out there floating around and another batch where the VIN was applied to a donor chassis from a balled up or burnt up car. Still more that had the original engine destroyed. Best to have a strong PPI clause in any sales contract. More than one seller has been completely blindsided by revelations about the car they thought was genuine. I would echo Phil's advice about hiring an RS expert. And possibly even get a second opinion. It's cheap insurance.
An RS touring with low miles and no rust/accidents is $400K and up. Way up. Add "provenance" and documentation from day one and you're into seven figures.
