Don't know how far back the dueling thing goes (didn't one of the U.S. presidents do that?)
However I have heard the same thing about the wild west (not sure if it was from the same source).
I know if I were in the wild west and some badazz was coming after me I would pick him off with a rife from a couple blocks away.
