My sister will be flying from Halifax with 2 young kids, so the easier the better. I wouldn't mind doing a day at Cape Canaveral with the kids - not a deal breaker, but something in the mix.

This afternoon I was looking at a few places in New Smyrna beach. It seems like a nice place - not as crazy as Daytona, but Daytona's right there if we want crazy for a night. Looks like a nice beach, a nice pet-friendly park.
Then you went to the wrong beach - or right after a big storm. Clearwater beach proper is like powdered sugar.

St. Pete Beach took it on the chin the last tropical storm we had two years ago - and lost about 100' of beach - Ft. Desoto is awesome (and natural) Sarasota/Lido Key is pretty awesome. Our beaches typically rank in the top 10 - including Destin - but remember that Destin is much more likely to be chilly in February

The Cape is pretty cool - plenty of things to do in Daytona - but I would not call the beaches very pretty.

I know Sunwing flys into St. Petersburg from Halifax Cheap Flights | Last Minute Flights | Champagne Service | FlySunwing.com

Water Temp in Feb/Mar will be about ten degrees cooler on the east coast & Upper Gulf coast (upper 50-s lower 60's) than the mid gulf coast (upper 60's lower 70's) - if you plan on spending any time in the water
