My first Porsche was an '88 911 targa, so basically the same as yours. The feel and driving dynamic of the earlier cars like the SC and 3.2L Carreras is very different from the late model 911s like the 996 and 997. This past summer, I bought another Porsche (sold the 911 years ago) and was looking at 996, 986, 997, 987 type cars. I even test drove a 996 turbo expecting to fall in love with it. It was fast, but I was very underwhelmed since I was expecting something like my old 911 but with more modern amenities. Whan I did eventually fall in love with that I think gives you the experience of the older car with some modern touches was a 987 Boxster or Cayman. You may want to check those out. Great cars. I ended up with a 2008 Boxster S, and I'm loving it.
