The difference between then and now. When I was a kid, and my Dad told me to shut up, I shut up. If he told me to sit quietly and not move, I didn't move. There were consequences that would follow if I didn't, learned as a toddler
He disciplined us sternly with spankings of varying intensity commensurate with the crime, ranging from a quick warning swat, to cherry-red stinging butt cheeks you were afraid to sit down on. He wasn't abusive, or a tyrant, but he didn't hesitate when we got out of line. He really was a pretty easy going guy, but especially in public places where a child's bad behavior affected other people, there was zero tolerance. Children were to be seen and not heard. Now people just ignore their kids and let them run wild.
