He disciplined us sternly with spankings of varying intensity commensurate with the crime, ranging from a quick warning swat, to cherry-red stinging butt cheeks you were afraid to sit down on. He wasn't abusive, or a tyrant, but he didn't hesitate when we got out of line. He really was a pretty easy going guy, but especially in public places where a child's bad behavior affected other people, there was zero tolerance. Children were to be seen and not heard. Now people just ignore their kids and let them run wild.

Dave, do you have any kids of your own yet? Your thoughts are in line with mine until about 4.5 years ago...
On another note, my son is an excellent traveler, he has been on well over 30 flights including long trips traveling to Europe twice, Hawaii, Florida, etc. He has been on long road trips towing the race car to Laguna Seca and other tracks and does well. My 1.5 year old daughter is not a great traveler. She did pretty good on our recent trip to Scotland.
Some kids just don't travel well, then add jet lag and lack of sleep to the mix... Fun times.
