I wear contact lenses and my mono vision prescription doesn't really work well for close up viewing or small text reading either, but it works well for mid distance--like dash instruments. This works well for 95% of my vision needs. Binocular distance vision prescription makes anything within arm's length blurry so I stay with a compromise set up and use readers for (you guessed it) reading. If I wore glasses, I think it would be harder to reach a solution.
