When I was a wee lad (about 14) I went through the ice during deer season. I stayed warm the two miles in the snow to the end of the drive (I went in a sweatshirt and vest this year for walking but it was in the 30s) and when I got everything packed up and in dad's Dodge Maxivan I took my boots off and put my feet up on the doghouse and he put the vent on full heat and full fan. My socks and pants dried pretty quick. The next year I had water resistant leather boots.

My trusty El Camino blew the OEM heater core about 20 years ago. Being stupid at the time I swapped it with a cheap aftermarket unit. That POS was pitiful for heat. At one point back at only 240,000 miles the engine was getting hot so I put in a 175 degree thermostat. I damn near froze to death that next winter. The POS heater core developed a leak and I dug my OEM core out of the attic and took it to a radiator shop. He fixed the leak and and flushed and boiled it.
When I installed it I made sure to pack insulation around the heater core so that any and all air coming into that heater box HAD to go through the core and not around it.
Now I have wonderful heat. It is really amazing how fast it heats up. The engine temp needle just moves off of the peg and I have some heat. By the time the gauge has moved into the 140 range I have full heat and that is within 1.5 miles. 333,000 miles and going strong.
