It feels that cold because there is no humidity. 40 and 10% humidity cools you off rather quickly as opposed to 30* and 80%. We had friends that went to camp in the desert when we live in CA. They thought it would be nice to sleep on an air mattress until about 2:00am when they couldn't stand the cold. A lot of people don't realize it gets cold in the desert even though it is in the 70s in the daytime and an air mattress lets all the cold underneath you instead of sleeping on the warm sand.
