Our house backs up to a pretty steep hill. Consequently the usable portion of our back yard is quite narrow. A prior owner put in a lap pool and spa. Nice, but the edge of the pool is 36" from the back door.

So, when we bought the house, 20 years ago, I wanted a pool cover somewhat like Wayne's that could be walked on for party time so those who drink a bit too much didn't just walk straight into the pool when exiting the house. I set out to make one, even had a bunch of galvanized metal brackets made, then I realized the cover would be too heavy to lift off to access the pool for swimming. Project abandoned.

That cover in the first post would have been perfect, but our days of drunken revelry have waned. Not to mention, I suspect the cost is considerable compared to the 2"x8" planks I had in mind.
