Everybody swoons over early 911 Turbos (lag and relatively little power and all) but no one wants a turbo 911? I just don't get it. And complaining about a flat 4? What about the Carreras, 550 Spyders, RSKs, and 904-4s that built Porsche's reputation as a giant killer? That won the Targa Florio, Le Mans, the Carrera Panimericana. Or is it the turbo part, you know, the thing that made the fire-breathing 935s and won Le Mans many times in the middle of a 956/962 all the way up to the GT1?
I love vintage chassis (light weight, manual steering, unassisted brakes) but engines have never been better. I recently drove a base 986 Boxster and was amazed at the power available low in the rev range. I would look down and kept seeing the revs only 3000 or so and it was pulling just fine. My 2.7 RS spec needs to be at least 4500 rpm before it gets interesting. Variable valve timing and EFI are sadly better than MFI.
