My fuel sender did the same thing. It is super easy to pull it out and look at it. Somehow a burr was built up on the tube part and it would catch the float and not allow it to go to the bottom. It was a simple fix to cut the burr off and it has worked fine for many years since. Just get a replacement gasket and go for it.
