Cool Lowering engine 2-3 inches question

I am in the middle of changing out my coolant tank. It seems that I will have to lower the engine a few inches.

The car now is sitting on rubber ramps 8"-10" inches high so that I can get clearance and work under the car. I have read a lot about lowering the engine but I need one more clarification.

Do I still need to support the vehicle with jack stands? Or I can lower the engine (unscrew mount nuts) while the car rests on its tires on these ramps.

That's my confusing point right now. One of my friends said that I must support the car with jack stands. Is that true?

Any info will be appreciated.
