What year/engine is your Subaru? Does it happen all the time or only when you start the car? We've got a 2005 Legacy GT with what I thought was a belt squeal on cold startup and I've been told it may actually be the starter motor sticking and producing a similar sound. All of our belts have been replaced and properly tensioned so at this point that's what I'm thinking the sound must be.
