Never seen a rear shelf quite like that. It doesn't seem like the two were made to be together.
Ask yourself if you want it, though. I'm of the mind that rear speakers only degrade the sound stage. If you're looking for more volume, get an amp with crossovers and maybe some better speakers. If you're looking for some bass, go for a sub. Maybe one of those powered underseat suckers. You'll come out with better sound and probably more money if you sold that shelf.
