I have solved the problem by splitting the existing shelf so the only part remaining is the back board and top edge. The flat shelf and trim around the window are replaced with the speaker box. It now fits perfectly. The shelf is only held together with staples so I can reverse the procedure if I want to.
I want the bax in my car as I like the look and it is a very rare item in the UK. If the speakers sound poor I will just adjust the fader forwards, or disconnect them!
