Just as you would say a rifle is a generic term for a firearm that has a rifled barrel and is generally held at the shoulder.

It is my understanding that a "pistol" is a semi-automatic type using a removeable clip or magazine and a "revolver" is one with a rotating cylinder that holds the ammunition. So, if I say pistol, I am talking about something like a Glock but if I say revolver, I am referring to something like a Colt Detective Special or a S&W Chiefs Special. The term "handgun" would cover both types.
