Baffling.
This is consistent with the information I had heard from someone who lives in the town. It appears that she was more concerned with the damage to her car than the significance of the barrier coming down (ie. a train is coming). Sad, but probably the confusion of the situation kept her from thinking about what her priorities should be and how dire her situation was.
