When you catch the dog doing the behavior say the command you want to use, then praise and reward with a treat. Most people use speak for barking. Since I trained Camber to speak english, I used bark for barking.

The way I taught Camber to speak english was when i was first training her to rollover. Instead of rolling over she barked at me and it sounded like rollover so I praised her for it and then kept it up. Then started only praising when it sounded more like rollover. Had to change the command to actually rollover to Can You Rollover. Next was I want it, then I want out. Then Anonther One for treats after the first one. Wasn't too long before What do you want, Tell Me or Speak got and english response.

To my first golden speak meant bark. She would bark to get my attention, then I would go through the the list of things she might want and she would bark or speak again when I got to the one she wanted. Also if I was asleep, to wake me up she would start very very softly then slowly increase the volume until I woke up. When she barked at someone coming to the door, I would say "who is that." Wasn't long before say who is that would put her on alert to see if someone was outside. If she heard some and started barking I would excitedly say Attack. Then she would go on alert and bark softly if someone was there, but only go into a barking frenzy if I said attack.

My first golden was very very eager to please and usually I only had to show her something two or three times and she would do it on command. Camber was terrible. Not only did I have to train most commands hundreds of times, if I stop using the command she would forget it. Even then, she had her own agenda and mostly only responded to commands that weren't immediately rewarding to her when and if she wanted. So far, Pepper is somewhere inbetween.
