I was in the USMC 40+ years ago. They don't teach you to box/fist fight, they teach you how to kill.
It isn't about kicking the guys ass, its about killing him (War, right?). Nothing in Parris Island for boot camp or Camp Lejeune for advanced training on "fighting". It was all about killing. Hand-to-hand was a hit to the windpipe or gouging out an eye, if it had to come to that. It was more about a K-bar knife to the heart, kidneys, liver, spinal cord at the neck, etc.
Google "naked strangle hold". You get behind someone, wrap your right arm around their neck from behind, lock your left and right hands in a clasp and drop you and him flat on the ground, you WILL break his neck. Doesn't matter if you're 150 lbs and he's 250 lbs. He will be dead, as long as you can drop both of you to the ground.
War is ugly business. I for one am glad that there are Marines, and others, who do the ugly business that most people can't imagine from their comfortable armchairs watching the evening news and being Monday morning quarterbacks.
