The US Customs *do* care. For whatever reason, you were lucky your cars made it through. The US Customs want to know that cars leaving their country have valid titles (not stolen), and are not the subjects of any criminal activities.

I concur with Doug. I'm just about to export my '75 Targa to Canada and the US Customs asked me to forward the title to my border crossing point at least 72 hours before I cross the border. In addition to what Doug mentioned, they also check for lienholders on the vehicule.
