Did 18s for better tire choices.
According to a tire rack study, they had to use lower rated 18s to match available 17s. Then the 17 and 18 were even performance wise. Most 18 compounds are faster than available 17. Going to 19 the tires got slower.
15 and 16 were faster than 17, but good luck finding some of those with any sort of half way sticky compound.
When I had my White 951S I was able to run R1 stickies on 17 in wheels.
