Getting out of the car early to be efficient would have been my first mistake. Where do people go for awareness training about this sort of thing so they don't get shot?

My advice to get through an encounter with the Police:
Rule one, always remember right or wrong, good or bad, you will NOT win any argument with a cop on the side of the road, EVER. Forget trying anything but following orders.
Rule Two, comply with
every order, do NOT make any sudden movements. Never reach for anything under a seat or in the glove box. If your registration is in the glove box tell the officer that and move slowly with his permission to get the registration.
Keep your hands in plain sight at all times.
Do not consent to any search of the vehicle, even if you are 100% innocent. They will trash or car. Ask for a supervisor.
If you feel your rights were violated don't yell at the cop, wait for a court of law.
