Skyfall was the first Craig film that really made me go 'wow'. I saw it in a big theatre, huge screen, all digital sound etc. It was captivating. It was a long film but it needed every minute of it.
Skyfall, GoldenEye, and The Living Daylights are my favourite of the bond films. All for slightly different reasons.
I think it is sad that Timothy Dalton isn't respected more for his bond films- I think if he would have started off with the director and script of GoldenEye instead of when he did with Living Daylights, he would have done 5-6 films in the 1990's that would have been huge. The guy is an amazing actor. But he was paired with not so great scripts and directing, I think.
Brosnan only had two great scripts- GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies. unfortunately for him, his films become more and more campy and targeted at a less-serious audience after the first. GoldenEye to me is still the #1 film that encompasses what 007 is supposed to be doing in a film.
And Craig is just different and serious, and that shouldn't always be considered better. Casino Royale was a long, boring mess of words with just enough action to make us all think it was amazing, and Quantum of Solace was a beautifully shot stream of nothingness that had no real reason.
Skyfall finally hit home with what essentially was a reboot of characters. I just hope this net one has a compelling script.
Seeing all these youtube videos where people have caught them filming car chases with all these concept cars worries me- I hate that crap, the bull***** car chases with some fiberglass fakery cars that aren't real- that is what Die Another Day was.
The best Bond chase scenes are the ones that are unconventional and involve real, less-than-super vehicles. i.e. the motorcycles in Skyfall, the tank in GoldenEye, the motorcycle/plane stunt in GoldenEye... etc. Nothing exotic there, no product placement there.
