He may be following the signs that they've leaving (carvings on the trees, graffiti with the 'X') and picking over stuff that they've left behind after their pillaging. I don't see how Morgan could possibly/logically be anywhere CLOSE to Alexandria, though. The last time he was seen was near Atlanta, and Rick's crew drove (at least most of the way) to Alexandria. Not sure how Morgan would have followed them.
