My brother has a bolt action Remington 22 that would be just the ticket for this sort of work. Very quiet and accurate. If your wife is out and about near dawn or dusk, she ought to carry some bear/pepper spray, just in case they need to be discouraged, unless she is agreeable to carrying something that would hit a bit harder.
Good chance they are too clever to trap anyway, but that is a pretty good option. Trap with the critter in it in a big box with some dryer hose that runs to the 911 exhaust works well and quickly, Camry hybrid would take forever probably.
Talk to your neighbors before the fact.
