I have not read this entire thread, so I don't know if someone has already suggested this, but the first thing what jumped out at me is...
Seems like a simple "time/plan swap" would be the easiest and most obvious solution.
Why didn't you just plan to take your kids for the bike ride somewhere between sunrise and 1 PM, then meet with the couple after 2?
