Here is the correct schematic, but I suspect it would not run at all if it was wrongly plumbed.
You have the heated air hose now but you may still have an issue with the thermostatic operation. I have never had mine apart but I understand its a simple stack of bimetal discs. You could probably check its operation with a hair drier or paint stripper heat gun.
