Alex-

One thing I tried that worked was putting a nail or pin in one end through about a 1/2 inch of the spring, then trying to bend the other half down to the opening and slide another pin or nail in to anchor that end. Then I was able to compress the rest of the spring and push the real pin all the way through. When I had to take it all back apart again because I (of course) forgot something, it was quite a bit easier the second time around...
