Interesting thread, some fun back and forth.

My main contribution to the idea that some people are over-pricing very average cars is that the main culprits are the independent dealers. I think more knowledgeable air-cooled buyers, especially repeat buyers, know sources to buy directly from private sellers. However, the uninformed are more likely to buy a car from a local import lot or through AutoTrader, possibly eBay. These two sources tend to attract independent dealers.

I am not suggesting they aren't reputable, but just tend to maximize there profit. Excellent low-mileage cars have moved to the stratosphere. Well into six-figures for a clean, nice, low mileage turbo. $50-70k for a clean, low mileage, but otherwise pedestrian Carrera. Once the great cars move up, the average cars follow - 'all boats rise in a rising tide'. I agree that I have seen some crazy prices, at least crazy to me.

The other thing that seems to be happening is the definition of low mileage is going higher too, so there less of a hit to cars in the 100-150k range. I know 4-5k/year is low mileage, I am sharing what I believe I have observed.
