I can completely understand why the whole period thing is off putting...For many thousands of years we considered women who are having their periods as being unclean, unsexy, uninteresting. I would imagine it has everything to do with the fact that when a women is having her period she cannot become pregnant. While this may seem like a strange reason to find a women uninteresting, it goes back to the main purpose of life which is to beget life. Males are attracted to fertile women with good complexions, wide enough hips for child birthing, ample breasts as a means to fed the infant and to be young so that they may have a very good chance at being healthy.

Plus its kinda gross and they don't like it much either...
