I was told by an oil cooler manufacturer to not mount an oil cooler with the inlet and outlet at the bottom. Oil follows the path of least resistance and will not fill the oil cooler. And I would guess there is air in the top of the cooler than can't be bled out.
I was told to either mount the inlet/outlet ports at the top, or if you mount it sideways, so the inlet is at the bottom and the outlet at the top.
