Up here divorce is fairly civilised. You split the assets (and debts) you acquired during the course of the marriage. If she claims maintenance the court might give her two or three years so she can go back to school to get a trade or a degree, but after that it's pay your own way baby. No going back to the well for a second try.

Child support is a different ball game. It goes on till the child is out of school. That all depends on how the lawyers write the separation agreement about child support and that has to concur with the child support laws.

I paid child support for 5 years. We came to a understanding outside of the courts ruling and 4years after that he came to live with me.

The lawyers were quite happy. They took $35,000 ( $15K from her and $20K from me).

No one is ever happy that you failed at something. At the time I was quite angry and bitter, but when you get older and realise that there are something's in life that you can't make work no matter how hard you try you move on and look for someone that you can make it work with.
