The issue is not Medicare or MC supplement insurance. The problem is for those of us who retire before the age of Medicare eligibility. The gap between leaving a company subsidized plan or small business consortium rate and being eligible for MC is expensive.
A basic FFS PPO plan for my wife and me at 55, both fit and healthy, is almost $1000 per month with a high deductible. That will get more expensive the closer we get to 65. If one of us needs a surgery or extended hospital stay, the out of pocket costs could hit $50,000 in a hurry (the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US).
