On my '92 Saturn SL2, I used 5w30 during winter and 20w50 in summer. It was burning oil, and the heavier weight reduced consumption. At 260000km (about 156000miles) I wasn't worried about engine life expectancy.
Related to engine oil is the filter. Interesting information here. I was quite surprised at the comments on Fram filters, but after taking one apart for myself fully agree. I use AC Delco filters on my cars, and choose the largest that will fit the car.
